ADVANCED PLACEMENT
The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a cooperative endeavor between high schools and colleges and universities. It allows students to enroll in college-level courses while in high school, and gives them the opportunity to show mastery by taking the AP exam in May. The cost for each exam is $78.00. Student will receive credit, advanced placement, or both at most colleges and universities. The amount of credit received varies on the college, AP score, and the subject. Some colleges grant up to six credits for a score of 5. Students are also able to move into a higher level class at college as a freshman. This not only translates into time saved, but also a financial savings for each credit earned while in high school. It is possible for a student to take enough AP exams to enter college at a sophomore standing. During the 2008-09 school year, 166 students took a total of 314 exams. 65% of the exams scored 3 or higher, making those students eligible for college credit. Several AP courses are also offered on-line. For further information, contact any teacher of the courses listed here, as well as Carol Railton, AP Coordinator, at 348-2000.
